“Once I began swimming, the beautiful scenery and icy cold water made me feel alive.“
I took the plunge and went on my first wild swim!
Many of us are yearning for outdoor adventures, but limited by restrictions amid the pandemic. A well timed invite from a friend to go wild swimming locally provided me with the perfect antidote.
On the last day of summer, we met at a slow flowing pool in a nearby river. I paired a bikini and thermal top combo with wetsuit boots for warmth and protection from sharp rocks. It was a practical but strange looking outfit.
I watched as my friend confidently strode into the river. I slowly edged into the cold water after her. Once I began swimming, the beautiful scenery and icy cold water made me feel alive.
After around 15 minutes, we climbed out of the water. We changed into dry clothes and drank a hot flask of coffee on the river bank to warm ourselves. I sat looking at the river, feeling chuffed with myself. As my body began to warm up, my mind felt a warm glow of contentment.
