Exploring The Cloud Forests of Costa Rica

Travelling abroad is a distant dream right now, but we can reminisce over previous adventures and plan future ones.

Part two of this mini series about Costa Rica covers the mystical Cloud Forests high up in the mountains.

We followed the Pan American Highway up into the mountains. Our accommodation was a simple cabin at a restaurant hailed as “the highest restaurant in Central America”. In the restaurant garden, hummingbirds swarmed around bird feeders and sat amongst bushes.

The next day we drove a short distance to San Gerardo de Dota, famous for its bird life. Here, the Savegre Hotel has a large nature reserve area attached which the public can enter for a small fee (10 US dollars). We hiked through the humid cloud forest, where trees were adorned with beautiful epiphytes.

Back in the Savagre Hotel gardens, fruit was arranged on a large log and surrounded by hummingbird feeders. We watched lots of hummingbirds and colourful small birds enjoy the feast. I could have spent hours watching and photographing these exotic creatures, but the road back to our accommodation was steep and windy so we didn’t want to risk doing it in the dark.
